Newly-spawned eggs of Fat greenling / Ainame (Hexagrammos otakii) fish, Hokkaido, Japan. Each egg measures around 3mm. Photographed at a magnification of 4x life-size. The juvenile fish are developed enough that their spinal cords and eyes are clearly visible. At this stage, the unhatched fish are mobile, twisting and turning inside their eggs from time to time.
