Rebecca Cliffe, a young British biologist working in Costa Rica has established an innovative tracking system for rehabilitated Sloths called the Sloth Backpack Project. At the Aviarios Sloth Sanctuary orphaned babies, injured adults and sloths confiscated from the illegal pet trade industry are nursed back to health and, if possible, released back into the rainforest. To learn about these animals' habits and patterns Becky has devised a small tracking 'backpack' which is strapped to the sloths and collects raw data which is downloaded when the devices are retrieved. By learning about the creatures' patterns in the wild Rebecca hopes to use this information to protect their habitats and their survival.
