Tracking the conservation efforts of Koala rescue teams in Australia, Suzi Eszterhas shares with us the tireless work of the professionals and volunteers who tend to sick and injured animals and replant habitat for these threatened marsupials. At the Koala Hospital in Port Macquarie and the Currumbin Wildlife Hospital workers tend to animals suffering from Chlamydia, retrovirus and injuries while also caring for young animals who have been orphaned. With medical care most koalas are returned to the wild but, sadly, many return. Habitat loss and overcrowding by human development has severely stressed the Koala population; according to Suzi, if these iconic animals are to be saved the best place to start is with saving their habitat.
