Orphan raccoons find a safe harbor at WildCare, a California-based rehabilitation facility in Marin County. When the young kits first arrive they receive a medical check-up, are rehydrated and fed. Once the babies are deemed healthy they will move through a number of foster homes as they are nurtured by caregivers. With close attention paid to their health the animals receive regular check ups, vaccinations and lessons on how to forage for native food. As all the young in a litter reach the weight of six pounds and they know how to survive in the wild the animals are microchipped and released at a site within three miles of where they were found. Suzi Eszterhas takes us behind the scenes to see how these fragile kits grow into strong raccoons ready to face the world!
