by Michael Quinton
Michael Quinton has spent twenty years photographing the secret lives of hawk owls in his mosquito and grizzly bear infested big back yard - the wilderness of Wrangell/St. Elias National Park in Alaska. In this story package he chronicles the nesting season with an owl family in their snag-top nest documenting the hatching and raising of an owlet brood. The Northern Hawk Owl is a tremendous hunter able to spot prey up to a half mile away. While the female protects the young the male's job is to feed the family. To fill their food requirements he will need to catch several hundred voles during the nesting season! Before arriving at the nest he pauses to prepare the prey by removing the guts and some of the animal's fur to make feeding easier for the chicks. And they thrive. Michael's photos follow the babies as they feed, fledge and eventually leave the nest to begin their lives as adults.
