When you talk about the Golden Hamster, you mean Mesocricetus auratus, the Syrian hamster. In 1930 the zoologist Israel Aharoni from the University of Jerusalem collected the first ever live hamster - a female with young from the Syrian Desert near Aleppo. Three of these young hamsters survived and this was enough to populate the whole world with the appealing critters. All hamsters in captivity come from these few brothers and sisters. Heidi and Hans-Jurgen take us underground to observe the lifecycle and behaviors of these favorite pets.
