Five hundred miles from the North Pole, glaciers glisten beneath a midnight sun. Prowling the sea ice, a hungry polar bear hunts for seals during the summer thaw. Dashing gracefully across the tundra, dwarf Peary caribou seem to take flight over the frozen, white expanse. Hampered by the poor, shallow soil, arctic poppies bring forth a brief burst of color into the harsh landscape. Jim Brandenburg's coverage shares with us the stark beauty of Ellesmere Island and the nature of life in the high arctic.
