Crinoids (29) More files... by Fred Bavendam
Spreading spindly arms in a brazen burst of color, feather star crinoids reach out their mucus-covered arms to feed on plankton rich currents. Often perceived as anchored, thorny plants, these brilliantly colored relatives of sea stars move freely through the environment by crawling or swimming with a gyrating, dance-like motion. With few predators and a fortress-like maze of arms, crinoids are ideal hideouts for a host of tiny commensal creatures which commonly match perfectly the color and pattern of the host. Through Fred Bavendam's patience and inquisitive eye, we feast our eyes on the vivid colors of these curious flower-like creatures of the coral seas.
