In the ice-free months of July and August, beluga whales gather by the thousands in the shallow bays of arctic Canada's Somerset Island to feed, molt and nurse their young. Flip Nicklin traveled to the icy north to chronicle this yearly migration. No longer commercially hunted for their blubber and skins, they now face the threats of a growing human population in the form of poisoning by industrial runoff. Only with intervention can these beautiful whales and the spectacle of their annual gathering survive for the benefit of future generations.
