Sea Otter Awareness Week, the last week in September, celebrates one of the most charismatic marine mammals. This is the time to learn more about these fascinating creatures. Did you know?:
The sea otter is the largest member of the weasel family but is the smallest marine mammal in North America.
Only 10% of North American sea otters live outside of Alaska.
They are voracious eaters and excellent hunters - each day they consume the equivalent of 25% of their body weight. This means they spend up to 12 hours a day foraging.
A group of sea otters is called a 'raft'.
A female southern sea otter can weigh up to 50 pounds, a male up to 70 pounds.
